We’re not sure we like all the changes, and that’s why we’ve taken our Australian made milk back to the basics. Wholesome farming practices, quick processing and happy cows are our main ingredients. By processing our own milk, we’ve managed to thrive in spite of the ongoing pricing war and the crisis it is causing for many farmers.

To understand what’s happening to dairy farmers you need to know a little bit about how the milk is made. Fresh milk straight from the cow is called ‘raw milk’ in our industry. That’s the bread and butter of your local dairy farmers (pun definitely intended).
The dairy farmers sell their raw product to a processing plant. This is a separate company that refines the raw milk into a finished product. It might be buttermilk, yoghurt, cheese or even just plain homogenized milk. These products are also packaged at the processing plant, then they’re sent to the store where your family can buy them.
Here Comes the Bad Part
Now, we could point out a couple of things we think is wrong with that basic process. It’s really not about how the milk is made, though. You see, the processing plants have been setting the prices paid to dairy farmers for raw milk. It’s a complicated system that’s difficult for many to understand, especially when you have all the responsibilities of a farm to tend to.
Several years ago, the two main processing companies in Australia significantly dropped their prices. This means you can buy dollar milks and cheeses at the store, but it’s costing dairy farmers everything they have.

When we couldn’t get a fair price for our raw milk, we knew something had to be done. We couldn’t wait for large companies to decide to behave better. So, we decided it was high time we took on a second business: dairy processing. Now, we’re our own biggest customer! All of our raw milk is processed directly on our farm.
Not only has this saved our family from some troubled waters, we’ve discovered that it really helps the taste of the milk. By processing everything direct, we’re cutting down on the time milk spends waiting to be processed. Our milk goes from cow to bottle within 12 hours and it has a shelf life of up to 20 days when stored properly. It’s so simple of an idea. If the middleman between you and the store won’t set a fair price, simply step around him.
We Need Your Help
We support our local farms by purchasing direct and paying fair trade milk prices, and we’ve even extended into fair trade purchasing from dairy farms around the world. It’s not just Australian farmers that are hurting. However, none of this is enough.
Those big companies know the same thing we do: controlling production and processing is the best way to make money in this business. If they can close enough dairy farmers, that’s more room for them to take over. Without any competition, the future of Australian milk might be a rather tasteless affair.
